30 Mei 2014 | Turkije, Istanbul

After a very intense night of clubbing in “Anjelique”, one of Istanbul’s best student clubs, with a lovely view over the water and Asian side of Istanbul, we had to get up early again to pack our bags. Since this is the last day, no company visits or whatsoever have been programmed. So after having breakfast everyone got the chance to discover Istanbul by him/herself.

With a group of 5, we went into the city where we met Olcay, an aeronautical student and friend of Joost, who studied in Delft for one year. We met him at the Taksim Square, which used to be a nice square surrounded by a park, but under command of president Erdohan has been demolished to make room for new buildings. On Saturday the 31th of May, it is exactly one year ago when an estimated one million Turkish men and women protested on the square. According to Olcay, this year there will be more protesting against president Erdogan’s regime.

Later that day we visited the Galata tower, which is one of the oldest and most beautiful towers of Istanbul. With a height of 77 meters from the ground and 140 meters from sea level, it offered an amazing 360-view all over Istanbul. Being guided by a local, we also drank some cay (Turkish apple tea) and smoked “sisha”.

One part of the group went to see the Blue mosque and AyaSofya. Some of us even managed to sneak in to see people praying. After a proper kebab meal and some souvenir shopping we grabbed our packed luggage at our apartments and headed towards the airport.

During this 10-day trip the group got the chance to discover Tel Aviv and Istanbul in both cultural and entrepreneurial way. We have visited accelerators, incubators, start-ups, worldwide operation companies and embassies. The group could not have been any better. Whether we had a company visit, case study, or simply a fantastic night of going out, everybody joined in 100%.

We would like to thank the YES!Delft Students board, Wouter de Bruijne, our sponsors and all the companies we have visited! Without you, these 10 intense days would not have been this amazing!
