Goodbye Tel Aviv

27 Mei 2014 | Israel, Tel Aviv

Day 7 was a traveling day. So instead of telling you how long our queues at the airport were – which we will actually mention later – we will only touch upon the actual day activities, and provide you with a brief summary of our experiences with Tel Aviv.

Our day started with a little pain in our heart, Tel Aviv provided us with such a great experience that we all felt sorry it was our last day. The prospect of going to Istanbul – a city with a whopping 14 million citizens, almost the size of Holland - definitely got a smile back on our faces. The group made good use of their free morning and relaxed on the beach or went on a strophe through the city. At approximately one o’clock we departed to the airport. Surprisingly we got through the very strict security on the Israeli airport and departed in an airliner (no names, but in the logo is a horse with wings) where we could barely fit our legs between the seats!

First impressions count. The moment we arrived on Istanbul airport we could immediately experience the innovative way the Turkish handle their queuing system: it only took us 2 hour to get through the passport control! Luckily we were soon underway to our hotel in the city center. Along the way we were all flabbergasted over the scale of the city: we’ve been driving through densely populated areas for 45 minutes before arriving at the hotel. First impressions count: Istanbul is going to be the crown on top of our Come With Me Tour 2014!

Looking back on our time in Tel Aviv we can draw a few conclusions on why Israel is called “The Startup Nation”. In addition to the multiple reasons we’ve been lectured about and we’ve experienced hands-on, the entire atmosphere breathes an entrepreneurial spirit. Failing is just another lesson learned, nothing to be afraid of. Make use of this experience and try to improve the next time: Israeli fear for worse than failure, since they are still a country at war. This creates a necessity to innovate and to think global. In addition, the proactive attitude of several VC’s, incubators and accelerators we’ve spoken to and visited contribute to this flourishing entrepreneurial area. The main reasons, however, are the “Chutzpah, global thinking, government -providing grants for startups- and their time in the military service. These all have been elaborated on in our earlier blogs. From a historical and cultural view the Kibbutz was one of the causes to bring a collective mindset among all Israeli citizens.

In short, we had an amazing time in Tel Aviv: from the eye-opening activities during the day to the active nightlife. Back to Istanbul: we finished our dinner very late at night but we’re looking forward to waking up early to visit the Fit Startup Factory and the Consulate General of the Netherlands. Will Istanbul surprise us just as much as Tel Aviv did? Istanbul, here we come!
