25 Mei 2014 | Israel, Haifa

On this beautiful sunday morning Sabbath had ended, and according to the Jewish week schedule, the working week commenced. As we headed for Haifa today, to visit the Philips department and the Technion University, we had to get out of bed early and face the commuters’ traffic on our way to the North.

These two visits gave the opportunity for us to benchmark the activities of a Dutch multinational abroad to the ones in the domestic country, and to benchmark Technion University to our own university (TU Delft). Having clearly in mind what the practices of both institutions are in the Netherlands, one can compare the Israeli practices to this and study cultural disperaties.

After an approximate one-and-a-half hour drive we arrived at the Matam high-tech park, where companies such as Intel, IBM, Microsot, Motorola, Google, Yahoo!, Elbit, CSR, Philips and Amdocs are located. Here we visited Philips Israel, is a cutting-edge innovator in the domain of healthcare utilities. With a turnover of 244 bilion for production a year, Philips has a vested name in the branch, and is global leader for 100 yearrs already. Their core business is geared towards the production of hospital and home healthcare solutions. By virtue of research and design in patient care and clinical informatics, the total services are optimised.

Philips Israel started as a start-up company. From the 37.000 employees in the Philips Healthcare sector worldwide, over 600 employees are located in Haifa. By collaborating in a joint venture with Siemens, the company grew largely. Philips’ growth in Haifa can be appointed to the research and design in computed tomography technology (CT). The newest developments on this field encompass the 3D mapping of a full body, with a differentiation of different body parts through light. Another leading innovation from Israel includes the Brilliance CT scanner, in which x-ray spectre is used to identify different pody parts.

The CT scanner uses a spectral machine to distinguish different materials. A new era in spectrocity is at hand: one can now rebuild a total virtual body with distinguished body parts by adding tags to the body representation.

From this very informative presentation, we continued our journey by visiting the Technion University. We arrived at the campus and were received by the Bronica Entrepreneurship Centre (BEC), which is like Yes!Delft, geared towards the promotion of techical entrepreneurship for students. Moreover, BEC was opened as the first and most powerful startup in Israel. In 2012 the total number of graduates at Technion consisted over 70000 graduates, from which 25% have made their own startup (and most of them within BEC).

An important line of approach of Technion University is to expose students to other skills such as entrepreneurship in a wide field of interest, rather than just only within the discipline of the study. In this respect, Technion forces students to look over the hedge to think out of the box. This is something that could be extended at TU Delft. It gives the technical university and its students a more interdisciplinary character, makes them more knowledgable and versatile.

Another difference between Technion and TU Delft is a difference in mindset: at Technion (but also Israel in general) there are a lot of start ups in software industry. At YES! Delft and the TU Delft.

After shortly visiting the The Bahá'í Gardens and enjoying the amazing view over Haifa we went back to Tel Aviv for dinner and another good night in the city.
