22 Mei 2014 | Israel, Tel Aviv

After an exciting first day in Israel the group was excited to start the second day. We started the day with traditional Israeli bread with hummus, as well as some European influences of Nutella, peanut butter and jam. There was a busy program with meetings at the Entrepreneurship Centre StarTAU, the Google Campus, Internet security company Check Point, and The Library which is a gathering place for start-ups. You can see all the excitement on our faces in front of the Google Campus.

With a great experience of the public transport, we arrived at Tel Aviv University, home of StarTAU. This is an Entrepreneurship Centre meant to provide entrepreneurs with the practical and professional guidance they need to start a successful business venture. Remarkably 99% of Israeli start-ups are in the ICT sector, which includes software design, hardware and apps. At StarTAU, the group learnt why the Israeli ecosystem is so aimed at entrepreneurship: the people have “chutzpah” or guts; they live in a multicultural society; a significant part of the population resided in “Kibbutz” or a small self-sustaining community; and it was also mentioned that the military service is a great factor in Israeli lives. After the presentation we had to pass through a large student festival to make our way to the Google Campus.

On 26th floor of a large fancy skyscraper was the Google Campus. Although associated with the name Google, the campus allows companies to grow without the name stuck to them. So entrepreneurs whom already participated in a launching program will be able to use desk space for them to develop for up to 6 months. The campus also offers mobile devices for app developers to verify their apps on each kind of platform. After feasting on the free replenishments supplied to all developers and visitors, we walked around the corner for our next stop, Check Point.
As one of the first internet companies Check Point was founded in 1993. It is now one of the most renowned Israeli companies with a client base of all the Fortune 500 businesses. We have learnt about the internet security world and what dangers exist on the internet.

The last visit the day had a bit of a turn. Apparently that elevator could not hold eight hummus filled students. The Library is a shared working space for dedicated entrepreneurs created by the municipality. Tel Aviv municipality wants to become one of the leadings cities in the world. They go by the idea of Richard Florida of the three T’s: Technology, Tolerance and Talent. A notable demographic of Tel Aviv that 35% of its population is between the age of 18 and 30. The municipality created a work-space for companies like Nifty. This is a company with eight employees who make SD-card adapters for MacBooks. It was inspiring to see that a Brit went from Manchester to Tel Aviv because Tel Aviv offers a great environment for entrepreneurs. With his enthusiastic story he brought this exciting day to an end.

However we still had energy to explore the nightlife of Tel Aviv. After looking for food, we have found a lovely pizza-place. With our networking skills, we arranged free entrance to one of Tel Aviv’s hottest clubs,Klara. Which was nice!
